Cole Hamels tossed two-hit shutout ball and struck out nine over eight innings, Chase Utley had a pair of RBIs with a third inning double and came around to score on a base loaded walk, and Brad Lidge used some theatrics to finish the game off in the ninth inning to give the Philadelphia Phillies a 3-1 win and a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five series with the Milwaukee Brewers.
Philadelphia scored all their runs with two outs in the third. After Carlos Ruiz singled to start the inning Hamels put down a sacrifice bunt but an error on Brewers second baseman Rickie Weeks left Hamels safe at first and Ruiz on third. Jimmy Rollins then flied out to left and Jason Werth struck out but Utley hit a 2-2 pitch to deep center for a double, scoring Ruiz and Hamels. Brewers’ starter Yovani Gallardo then intentionally walked Ryan Howard and Pat Burrell coaxed a walk to load the bases for Shane Victorino who walked on four pitches.
Hamels set down the first 11 Brewers before giving up a single Corey Hart in the top of the fifth inning. Lidge came on to pitch the ninth and after striking out Mike Cameron he gave up a single to Ray Durham and Ryan Braun followed with a double that plated Durham. Lidge then struck out Prince Fielder for out number two but J.J. Hardy walked to put men at first and second and Hart at the plate. Lidge threw a wild pitch to move Braun and Hardy to second and third but got Hardy swinging to preserve the win and earn the save.
Philadelphia will host Milwaukee again tomorrow with Brett Myers facing C.C. Sabathia, game time is set at 6:00 p.m. ET.
