James Loney hit a grand slam in the fifth inning and Manny Ramirez added a solo shot in the seventh to help lift the Los Angeles Dodgers past the Chicago Cubs 7-2 on Wednesday night and take a 1-0 lead in their best-of-five playoff series.
The Cubs jumped in front 2-0 in the second when Mark DeRosa hit a two-run homer to right off Dodgers starter Derek Lowe but Chicago starter Ryan Dempster couldn’t hold the lead as he issued seven walks over 4 2/3 innings and gave up a game-changing grand slam to Loney in the fifth after walking the bases loaded to give L.A. a 4-2 lead.
Manny Ramirez added to the Dodgers lead with a solo blast in the seventh inning off Sean Marshall. Blake DeWitt scored in the eighth inning on a Casey Blake single and Russell Martin hit a solo home run in the ninth to finish off the scoring for Los Angeles.
Former Cubs ace Greg Maddux came on in the ninth to pitch for the Dodgers and gave up an infield single before retiring the side to preserve the win.
The Chicago Cubs will host the Los Angeles Dodgers again tomorrow with Carlos Zambrano facing Chad Billingsley. Game time is set for 9:30 p.m. ET.
