Thabo Mbeki Encouraged to Maintain Role as Mediator in Zimbabwe Power-Sharing Talks

Despite resigning as South Africa’s president Thabo Mbeki has been encouraged to maintain his role as the lead mediator in the ongoing power-sharing discussions in Zimbabwe.

New South African leader Kglema Motlanthe, acting in a caretaker capacity until presidential elections are held early next year, declared Mbeki had an “ability to build on the historic successes already made in the power-sharing negotiations under his mediation.”

While Mbeki was able to broker a deal that brought Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe and opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai of the Movement for Democratic Change together but now the two sides appear deadlocked over an issue concerning the distribution of cabinet seats.

Under the agreement forged by Mbeki, Mugabe will remain president while Tsvangirai will have the role of prime minister. The agreement also stipulated Mugabe’s ZANU-PF party would hold 15 cabinet seats while Tsvangirai’s MDC would have 13 and an offshoot of the MDC led by Arthur Mutambara would have 3 seats.

Mbeki resigned as president of South Africa after accusations he interfered with a case against his African National Congress rival Jacob Zuma. Mbeki has denied any interference but said he would step down for the good of the ANC.
