Possible Steve Fossett Plane Wreckage Found After IDs Sparked Search

The possible wreckage of missing adventurer Steve Fossett may have been found by aerial crews, who began their search after a hiker found the millionaire’s ID, cash and sweatshirt in a bush near the town of Mammoth Lakes.

Hiker Preston Morrow found three ID cards bearing Fossett’s name, $1,005 cash and a weathered sweat shirt in eastern California. His discovery sparked a new search for Fossett’s plane and remains.

Fossett, 63, disappeared last September after taking off from Flying M Ranch for a pleasure flight over the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. He never returned. A massive search was launched but uncovered no clues as to what happened to Fossett. He was declared legally dead in February.

Searchers began combing a rugged part of eastern California where the IDs were found. They have spotted what is thought to be wreckage, possibly of Fossett’s plane. Authortities are still trying to determine if it is Fossett’s plane.

Fossett’s widow Peggy says she hopes her husband’s remains are found. "I am hopeful that this search will locate the crash site and my husband's remains," she said in a statement Wednesday. "I am grateful to all of those involved in this effort."
