The wreckage of a small single-engine plane discovered in California has been confirmed to be the aircraft owned by Steve Fossett who disappeared more than a year ago.
On Wednesday two hikers discovered items belonging to Fossett along a trail near their Mammoth Lakes home. Police identified those items as a pilot’s license issued by the FAA with Fossett’s name on it, a jacket and cash.
Police then organized a search of the area and found the wreckage and were able to identify the plane as the Bellanca Super Decathlon owned by Fossett from its plate.
A new search is being organized to look for the remains of Fosett who was declared legally dead last February. He had taken off from Nevada on Sept. 3 of last year for what was expected to be about a three-hour flight but he was never seen again.
