Steve Fossett Plane Wreckage Found, No Human Remains

Authorities have confirmed that wreckage found near Mammoth Lakes, California is the plane piloted by missing adventurer Steve Fossett. No human remains were found.

"They did locate an aircraft which we have now confirmed is the one Steve Fossett was flying when it disappeared last Labor Day," Madera County Sheriff John Anderson said Thursday.

Fossett, 63, disappeared last September after taking off from Flying M Ranch for a pleasure flight over the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. He never returned. A massive search was launched but uncovered no clues as to what happened to Fossett. He was declared legally dead in February.

Earlier this week, hiker Preston Morrow found three ID cards bearing Fossett’s name, $1,005 cash and a weathered sweat shirt in a bush just west of Mammoth Lakes. His discovery sparked a new search for Fossett’s plane and remains.
