Brian David Mitchell, the accused kidnapper of Elizabeth Smart, appeared to suffer a seizure Tuesday morning in court. Mitchell moaned and collapsed as the judge entered the court room. One of Mitchell’s attorneys told the judge he could possibly be experiencing a seizure. Paramedics treated Mitchell at the scene and took him to a nearby hospital. He appeared alert as he was taken out of the court room.
Mitchell is on trial for Smart’s kidnapping in 2003 when she was 14-years-old. He held Smart captive for 9 months and repeatedly raped her. Smart previously testified that Mitchell suffered a seizure once while raping her.
Outside the courthouse, Mitchell’s stepdaughter told reporters Mitchell has a history of seizures. “This isn’t something he’s making up. This is real,” said Rebecca Woodridge.
