Lt. Michael Pigott, Officer Involved in Iman Morales Taser Death, Commits Suicide

Lt. Michael Pigott, the police officer involved in the Iman Morales taser death in New York, committed suicide Thursday, according to reports.

Pigott, a 21-year veteran of the police force, gave the order to fire a Taser stun gun at Morales, who then fell 10 feet and died.

Pigott was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head while in a police locker room at a former airfield in Brooklyn.

For the past several days prior to his death, Morales was seen pacing his apartment and going through emotional distress.

On Sept. 24, Morales was naked and emotionally disturbed as he climbed out his third-floor apartment onto a fire escape. After unsuccessfully attempting to enter his fourth-floor neighbor's apartment, he climbed down onto a roll-down security gate.

Police were called to the Morales' building in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Bedford-Stuyvesant. When they arrived, Morales jabbed at Pigott with the eight-foot-long light bulb, causing Pigott to order Officer Nicholas Marchesona to fire the Taser. Morales plunged head-first to the sidewalk.

According to police reports, Pigott's order violated police guidelines, in addition to the fact that an inflatable bag was on its to cushion Morales' fall in case he fell, but it had not gotten there yet.

The incident received national attention after an amateur video of it was posted on You Tube and shown on news Web sites and television broadcasts.

Following the death of Morales, Lieutenant Pigott and Officer Marchesona had been placed on desk duty with Fleet Services, which handles the Police Department’s vehicles.

On Thursday, the morning of Morales' funeral, Pigott went alone to Floyd Bennett Field, the headquarters of the police Emergency Services unit, in Brooklyn and shot himself with a 9mm Glock that was not his own. Thursday was also Pigott's 46th birthday.

Pigott, who received 20 police medals in his career, lived with his wife, Susan, two sons and daughter in Sayville on Long Island.
