Authorities say a small amount of human remains was found in the wreckage of the plane that millionaire Steve Fossett was piloting when he disappeared last September. Searchers who examined the wreckage said “very little” human remains was found among the debris.
The plane wreckage was found Wednesday in the Sierra Nevada. The new search was sparked after a hiker found three ID cards bearing Fossett’s name, $1,005 in cash and a weathered sweatshirt in a bush near Mammoth Lakes.
The plane appears to have crashed into the side of a mountain. Madera County Sheriff John Anderson said the damage was “so severe I doubt someone would’ve walked away from it.”
A coroner will examine the remains.
Fossett disappeared September 3, 2007 after he took off in a single engine plane from the Flying M Ranch in Nevada. He said he was going on a pleasure flight over the Sierra Nevada but never returned. A massive search was launched but did not uncover any clues as to what happened to Fossett. He was declared legally dead in February.
