Car Bomb Explodes Near Russian Military Base in South Ossetia, Six Killed

At least six people have been killed by a car bomb that detonated near a Russian military base in the capital city of Tskhinvali in South Ossetia.

Russia’s presence in Georgia’s breakaway region of South Ossetia continues to foster a high level of tension between the two countries. Friday explosion that included at least four in addition to the half-dozen killed is considered the worst attack since the Russian-Georgia war ended in August.

Russia has kept several thousand troops in South Ossetia as well as Abkhazia, having recognized the two regions as independent from Georgia. President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin have stated Russia will remain in the two regions to ensure they remain safe from potential attacks launched by Georgia.
