Remains Found Near Steve Fossett’s Plane Thought to be Those of Adventurer

Investigators may have found the remains of adventurer Steve Fossett, announcing they had discovered a small amount of bone fragments they believe are human. Those remains should be sufficient for DNA testing and could identify the victim as Fossett.

The wreckage of Fossett’s single-engine Bellanca Super Decathlon plane was found earlier this week after a pair of hikers in Mammoth Lakes, CA discovered items belonging to Fossett along a trail near their home.

Search crews found the remains of the plane in a remote area of the Sierra Nevada Mountains just west of Mammoth Lakes. According to officials it appeared as if Fossett slammed into a mountain side head-on, killing him instantly.

Fossett, 63, disappeared in Sept. last year after taking off from a Nevada airstrip for what was expected to be about a three-hour flight. Rescue workers searched months for Fossett but were never able to locate wreckage of the plane and in February he was declared legally dead.
