Russia has called for a joint international plan of action to deal with the recent influx in acts of piracy off the coast of Somalia.
The call for action comes just after the Ukrainian ship Faina, carrying 33 Russian-made tanks, was hijacked by pirates who are now demanding a $20 million ransom for its return.
That vessel has since been surrounded by U.S. warships to ensure the cargo is not unloaded on ground.
Russia has also sent a warship to the Somali waters off the Horn of Africa and has called the acts of piracy “outrageous.” On Thursday the European Union agreed to establish an anti-piracy operation to halt the rise of such acts.
