Candace Parker to Become First Player to Win WNBA MVP, Rookie of the Year
Los Angeles Sparks forward Candace Parker will receive the WNBA Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award, according to reports Friday.
Parker will become the first woman in WNBA history to win the MVP and Rookie of the Year awards in the same season.
Parker, the No. 1 draft pick in the 2008 WNBA Draft from Tennessee, averaged 18.5 points on 52.3 percent shooting from the field, a WNBA-best 9.5 rebounds and 2.3 blocked shots in the regular season.
The WNBA is scheduled to make successive announcements for rookie of the year and MVP before Game 2 of the Detroit Shock-San Antonio Silver Stars series in San Antonio (ESPN2, 7:45 p.m. ET).
The WNBA also announced its all-rookie team Friday. Parker, a unanimous selection as rookie of the year, was joined on the team by Minnesota guard Candice Wiggins, Chicago center Sylvia Fowles, Minnesota center Nicky Anosike, Houston guard Matee Ajavon and Connecticut forward Amber Holt.
Ajavon and Holt tied for the fifth spot on the team and were both rewarded with a selection. Wiggins was named the WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year, averaging 15.7 points, 3.2 rebounds and 3 assists for a Lynx squad that finished 16-18. She came off the bench in 29 of the 30 games she played.
Detroit Shock forward Plenette Pierson, last year's winner, was second with 10 votes.
