Russia and Qatar Win Bids to Host World Cup in 2018 and 2022

The host countries for the 2018 and 2022 World Cup were announced this morning by FIFA president Joseph S. Blatter.  The announcement took place in Zurich, Switzerland around 10:35 EST this morning.

Blatter started his speech by touting FIFA's and soccer's popularity around the world.  He then spoke about how, while a "combat game," there are still learning and educational opportunities in the sport.  He said it was a difficult decision, but there could only be one winner out of the four applicants for each draw.

The host for the 2018 FIFA World Cup was announced as Russia.  Russia beat out three other bidders, The Netherlands and Belgium; Spain and Portugal; and England.  The Deputy Prime Minister of Russia was on hand to accept the bid and give a brief speech.

He said, "We all can promise you will never regret" choosing Russia.  "Let us make history together."

Blatter made sure not to breeze over the selection, and congratulated Russia on winning their bid.

The 2022 host will be Qatar.  Qatar was chosen over other applicants the United States, Japan, Korea Republic, and Australia.

The representative, Sheik Mohammed bin Hamad Al-Thani from Qatar beamed as he hugged Blatter before being presented with the trophy.  He thanked the committee for believing in change and for the opportunity to host the championship.  "You will be proud of Qatar, you will be proud of the Middle East and I promise you this," he said on the verge of tears.

The FIFA World Cup is one of the most popular sporting events in the world.  Host countries place bids decades in advance of the host years and spend millions on building costs in preparation and infrastructure costs.  The payoff is often worth it as tourists from around the world visit various cities in and around the host country, spending money and providing an boost to the economy.

The United States had high hopes to receive hosting duties for the 2022 World Cup, with former President Bill Clinton, Landon Donovan and Morgan Freeman officially presenting the bid yesterday.
