Turkish Troops Involved in Deadly Clashes with Kurdish Rebels

At least 15 Turkish soldiers have been killed in a violent clash with Kurdish rebels near the Iraqi border in the southeast area of Semdinli. Turkish officials have said they killed 23 rebels who were believed to be fighters for the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in the attack.

According to reports the PKK launched the surprise attack on a military outpost using heavy artillery and Turkish troops engaged the rebels leading to the highest death total in a year.

The area of Semdinli is popular for the PKK because it allows them to slip into northern Iraq yet Turkish troops have stepped up their aggression towards the rebels, often crossing the border to attack the militants.

Turkish officials have blamed the PKK for several bombings across the country, most recent among them the July bombing in Istanbul that killed 17 people.
