Jimmy Clausen threw for 347 yards and three touchdowns, Michael Floyd had 115 yards receiving and a TD and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (4-1) forced four turnovers to beat the Stanford Cardinal (3-3) 28-21 on Saturday.
Clausen put the Irish in the endzone in the first quarter with a 21-yard touchdown pass to Armando Allen Jr. but Stanford tied the game early in the second quarter on a one-yard run from Toby Gerhart. Allen then reclaimed the lead for Notre Dame with a 3-yard run and Clausen pushed their advantage to 21-7 when Clausen and Floyd hooked up on a 48-yard TD pass.
In the second half the Irish extended their lead to 28-7 when Clausen tossed his third touchdown of the game, a 16-yarder to Kyle Rudolph, and it looked like Notre Dame would cruise but Stanford didn’t give up.
The Cardinal cut their deficit to 28-14 early in the fourth quarter on a Tavita Pritchard to Jim Dray one-yard pass and then Stanford scored again on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Pritchard to Doug Baldwin to get within 28-21 but Notre Dame buckled down defensively over the final five minutes of the game to earn the home win.
Notre Dame will travel to North Carolina next week while Stanford hosts Arizona.
