Curfew Imposed in Kashmir Ahead of Separatists March

Kashmir residents are under an indefinite curfew as the Indian-administered territory prepares for a planned march by separatists who are calling for an end to Indian rule.

That march is planned for Monday in Lal Chowk but authorities have taken steps to prevent the protest from taking place. Officials have warned that any violation of the curfew would result in a response by security forces.

The tension between the majority Muslim population and the Indian-controlled region eased during Ramadan but with the end of the holy month there have been calls to reignite the protests.

Much of the anger has centered on an agreement reached during the summer in which land was granted to a board that oversees a Hindu shrine. Muslims in the area protested and violent clashes with police became a frequent occurrence.
