Nigerian Oil Workers Freed by Militants, Three Foreign Workers Remain Held

The militant group Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta has released 19 Nigerian oil workers but has said they are still holding two British workers and a Ukrainian for what they call, “their own safety.”

MEND has said they rescued the 22 hostages from a “pirate” group who seized the workers in the turbulent oil-producing area of the Niger Delta. The group has said they could not free the three foreigners due to “security concerns” and that they were being held for their own safety.

Kidnapping of oil workers in the Niger Delta has become a growing problem for Nigeria as it has led to several investors shying away from entering any deals with the country and as a result oil production has taken a serious hit.
