New acupuncture treatment announced at New England drug rehab

New England drug rehab announces newest treatment treatment modality

Ancient old world traditions have long found their way into modern society through unconventional means, acupuncture notwithstanding.

The use of acupuncture in various applications throughout the world is widespread, and one such application is within the addiction treatment field. Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center has been known for its innovative approaches to substance abuse treatment and has recently unveiled this treatment modality into its program.

“Our treatment facility is known for its innovative approaches to treatment,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “Our holistic drug rehab program has emerged as the most innovative pattern for care within the addiction treatment field in the past two decades. Recently, Mountainside further expanded its innovative treatment program with its newest offering: acupuncture. While the use of acupuncture is being proven to help those addicted to drugs or alcohol; we have further expanded on this by adopting a specialized treatment modality known as the NADA protocol. The NADA protocol sets itself apart from typical acupuncture because it focuses on best practices for the specific treatment of addictions. Its effectiveness is well documented, and both clients and practitioners are seeing the positive results.”

Specialized training in NADA protocol is required; this training involves understanding the five particular points in the outer ear that are utilized in the process. During the procedure, stainless steel needles (used just one time and then discarded) are inserted just under the skin. The needles can remain in place for up to an hour while the client is relaxed in a comfortable position. Acupuncture detoxification is not a stand-alone treatment; rather, it is part of a comprehensive treatment plan which also involves counseling, education, other holistic therapies as well as other treatment options that address the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of addiction.

Acupuncture detoxification, also known as acu detox, five point ear acupuncture protocol, five point protocol and 5NP can be administered in a variety of settings including both inpatient and outpatient treatment. Benefits reported by clients, as well as practitioners, include improved program retention, a more cooperative attitude towards recovery as well as reduction in associated addiction challenges such as cravings, sleep disturbance and anxiety. Many have also reported a decreased need for pharmaceutical intervention as well.

Chinese medicine has utilized acupuncture as a treatment for many ailments and is often regarded as a panacea by traditional Chinese herbalists. Ancient medicine introduced the school of thought which believes that energy, also known as qi, flows through the body under the surface of the skin along lines called meridians. In order to maintain one’s health, qi must flow unrestricted through the body. Throughout life, a variety of different things begin to block the energy flow and, as a result, various mental and physical ailments result. Acupuncture is thought to unblock and allow the energy to flow freely through the body, allowing it to heal.

For the past 12 years, Mountainside has established itself as an innovator within the addiction treatment field, and the treatment modalities Mountainside utilizes are regarded as among the most cutting-edge approaches in helping individuals to get and to remain sober.

The compassionate, caring treatment team at Mountainside is comprised of licensed and certified counselors and social workers as well as a Nurse Practitioner and a Registered Nurse, both of whom have specialization and extensive experience in drug addiction and alcohol treatment. For clients who may have psychiatric issues and/or a dual diagnosis, Mountainside provides the services of a Psychiatrist who also has specialization in addictions. As a result of their unique, innovative approaches to addiction treatment over the past 12 years, Mountainside has become the model for the addiction treatment field.

The program, along with its professional addiction treatment team, have earned national recognition and resulted in Mountainside being invited to Washington by the White House to meet with the White House Drug Czar, John P. Waters, for an in-depth meeting on what makes its program so successful. These accolades did not go unnoticed within the addiction treatment field and resulted in the adoption by many throughout the country of a more holistic approach to drug addiction treatment.
