On this week’s episode of maniaTV’s hit music show, All Access, host Samantha Maloney heads to the Short Stop Bar in Los Angeles to play some pool with the four piece all-female rock band, The Donnas. The Donnas achieved major commercial success in the late-90s and afterward, and are known best for their 2002 album, “Spend the Night”. They are often compared to bands like The Ramones, AC/DC and Kiss. The four femme fatales spend the day with Samantha to discuss everything from sexism surrounding all-girl bands, to their newest album, “Bitchin”, and the secret behind the name of their new music label, Purple Feather Records. All five women end the day with a celebratory shot of whisky.
After her time with The Donnas, Samantha heads to the famous Monolith Festival at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado to catch up with Knoxville rockers, Superdrag. Superdrag are a punk pop band with a sound relative to the British Invasion-style pop of the Beatles and the Zombies. They are known best for their 1996 hit single "Sucked Out”.
The new episode of All Access premieres this week on maniaTV.com.
About The Donnas
Aspiring to nothing more than a good old-fashioned rock & roll party, the Donnas won a cult following and considerable media attention in the late '90s after scoring a record deal right out of high school. Early on, they were invariably described as "the Ramones meet the Runaways," with a definite emphasis on the former (they'd even adopted identical first names as a tribute). But their bratty high-school-delinquent image was clearly indebted to the latter, as their songs concerned themselves mostly with boys, booze, drugs, and hated classmates. As the Donnas grew up and polished their technical abilities, their music evolved into a distinctly female take on cock-rock metal, drawing more from AC/DC, Kiss, and Motley Crüe than from punk. Some critics praised their cheerfully crude adoption of male sexual bravado; others complained that the band's music never transcended its vintage influences, and remained suspicious that their naughty-girl packaging was a bigger part of their appeal.
About Superdrag
Though many have dubbed Superdrag a punk-pop or power pop band, their music has shown itself to be atop of the aforementioned genres. Taking as much influence from the British Invasion-style pop of the Beatles and the Zombies as My Bloody Valentine and Hüsker Dü, their songs have always combined melodicism and noise in fully distinct fashion. While many have compared frontman John Davis -- no relation to the Jonathan Davis of Korn or John Davis of Folk Implosion -- to Big Star's Alex Chilton in terms of his throaty vocals, often cynical lyrics, and major-minor chord progressions, the history of the two Tennessee-based groups have shared many parallels in terms of being a band's band that has often gone misunderstood.
