The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has announced the Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to a pair of Japanese citizens as well as an American.
Makoto Kobayashi and Toshihide Maskawa were named recipients for their work in predicting the existence of quarks, the sub-units of protons and neutrons.
Yoichiro Nambu’s work in spontaneous broken symmetry in subatomic physics earned him the award. The work done by Nambu is seen to be highly relevant to the upcoming experiments to be conducted by the Large Hadron Collider. Poplar belief suggests mass exists in the universe due the breaking of symmetry.
Kobayashi, 64, works at the KEK Laboratory in Tsukuba, Japan while Maskawa, 68, is affiliated with the University of Kyoto, Japan.
Nambu, 87, is affiliated with the University of Chicago.
