Several key members of South Africa’s ruling African National Congress have hinted they may split from the party following the recent resignation of former President Thabo Mbeki.
Mosiuoa Lekota, former defense minister for the ANC, has said “We intend within a short period of time... to call a national convention of comrades or something of that nature to determine how to proceed to defend democracy in this country.”
Mbeki resigned as President last month after he was pressured to step down by his own party. Last December Mbeki lost his leadership role in the ANC to Jacob Zuma. With general elections scheduled for early next year Zuma was seen as Mbeki’s likely successor but he was hit with allegations of corruption but a judge ruled those charges were politically motivated and pointed to Mbeki as a possible instigator.
Mbeki has denied any involvement in the case but felt his ANC party was pressuring him to step down.
Lekota has since accused the ANC of threatening democracy within the country and stated, “If the leadership of the ANC continues in their arrogance... we will proceed with the next step.”
