Two bodies found by fisherman off the coast of Italy are believed to be those of Richard Abruzzo and Carol Rymer Davis, two American balloonists who went missing on September 29 while competing in a race. Port officials say the remains were found in the Adriatic Sea around 1 a.m. Monday.
Documents on one of the bodies helped authorities make the identifications. The families of Abruzzo and Davis are en route to Bari, Italy to officially identify the bodies.
Abruzzo, 47, and Davis, 65, were competing in the 54th Gordon Bennett Gas Balloon Race when they went missing. The race began on September 25 in Bristol. Race officials lost contact with them on September 29. A massive search was launched, but was unsuccessful. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the accident.
