USA Today Super 25 HS Football Rankings (Week 7): Byrnes (SC) Still #1

Byrnes (Duncan, SC) remains No. 1 in the USA Today Super 25 high school football rankings despite having two players arrested.

Byrnes was led by junior running back Marcus Lattimore, who ran for 175 yards and a touchdown, and Daniel Cleveland returned an interception 40 yards for a TD in a 38-12 defeat of Pahokee (FL).

Two Byrnes players were among three people charged with assault and battery early Saturday morning after the Pahokee game. In addition to Byrnes’ troubles, Pahokee’s game against Byrnes came just six days after their linebacker Norman Griffith was shot to death in Florida.

No. 11 Lowndes County (Valdosta, GA) defeated No. 19 Northside (Warner Robins, GA), 24-7, giving Lowndes its 20th consecutive win and snapping Northside’s 35-game win streak. The game was televised on CBS College Sports on Friday at 8pm EST.

Two teams dropped out of the USA Today Super 25 rankings this week, but were ironically replaced by their city rivals.

Colerain (Cincinnati) lost 42-39 to Middletown, Ohio, which was unranked nationally or regionally, and was replaced by Elder (Cincinnati). Elder’s only loss was 35-24 to then-No. 6 St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale).

Trinity (Louisville) also dropped out the top 25 after losing 30-6 to St. Xavier (Louisville), who then moved into the rankings.

All four teams are within 100 miles away from each other as Cincinnati and Louisville sit along the Ohio River.
