Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko Dissolves Parliament, Calls Snap Election

Ukrainian President Viktor Yuschenko has dissolved parliament and called for snap elections after the coalition government currently in place collapsed.

Yuschenko was responding quickly to a move from other members in the coalition, including Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, who supported a call for reducing his authority.

Yuschenko and Tymoshenko were once close allies that brought in a pro-Western coalition during the 2004 “Orange Revolution” and positioned Yuschenko for the presidency and Tymoshenko as prime minister.

It wasn’t long before the two former allies became bitter enemies with Yuschenko accusing Tymoshenko of trying to undermine his powers. Yuschenko maintains that is what led to his decision to dissolve parliament declaring, “I am convinced, deeply convinced that the democratic coalition was ruined by one thing alone - human ambition. The ambition of one person. Thirst for power, different values, personal interests taking precedence over national interests.”

In early September Yuschenko pulled his Our Ukraine party from the coalition following the Tymoshenko Bloc’s decision to back measures to reduce presidential powers.

There has been no date for the new parliamentary elections.
