Officials say 40 people were killed and at least 70 others injured when two suicide bombers dressed as policemen detonated at a government building in Ghalanai, a town in the Mohmand Agency district of Pakistan. Two journalists were among the dead. The attack was launched just as government officials were scheduled to meet with a volunteer militia group and tribal elders.
One bomber detonated inside the building and the other detonated at the gate of the building. The men’s suicide vests were packed with bullets. “These bullets killed everyone who was hit,” said Amjad Ali Khan, a political official. “There were two bombers. They were on foot. The first blew himself up inside the office of one of my deputies. The second one set off explosives when guards caught him.”
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack. Three weeks ago, the Taliban released pamphlets warning militias they would “face consequences” if they joined the government in fighting militants.
