Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish faith, begins at sunset on Wednesday, October 8, 2008.
The official time of Yom Kippur is based solely on the time of sunset in the local area.
Yom Kippur is observed on the tenth day of the Jewish month of Tishrei, which is an ancient word for forgiveness, in accordance to Leviticus 23:37.
Yom Kippur, which by definition means "day of atonement" in Hebrew, is the most solemn and important of the Jewish holidays. The holidays centers around the tenets of atonement and repentance.
Jews traditionally observe Yom Kippur with a 25-hour period of fasting and intensive prayer, often spending most of the day in synagogue services. Unlike a regular day, which has three prayer services, or a Shabbat or Yom Tov, which have four prayer services, Yom Kippur has five: Ma'ariv; Shacharit; Musaf; Mincha; and Ne'ilah, the closing prayer
Yom Kippur is the tenth and final day of the Ten Days of Repentance, which begin with Rosh Hashanah.
