U.S. President Georgia Bush has signed into law a nuclear deal that will allow India access to civilian nuclear technology and fuel. In return the United States will be allowed to inspect those civilian facilities but it still prevents inspection of military facilities.
The controversial deal has been met with criticism from several who argue the deal will allow India to build its nuclear power capabilities without having to sign the Non-Proliferation Treaty that prohibits the expansion of technology for military purposes.
India has been in desperate need to meet rising energy demands and the deal is expected to help satisfy those needs.
Speaking after signing the deal Bush stated, “This agreement sends a signal to the world: Nations that follow the path to democracy and responsible behavior will find a friend in the United States of America.”
On Friday U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Indian Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee will formally sign the bilateral deal.
India has already signed a deal with France to purchase nuclear reactors.
