David Kernell, Son of Democratic State Legislator, Pleads Not Guilty to Hacking Email Account of Sarah Palin

David Kernell, the son of Tennessee state legislator Mike Kernell, has pled not guilty to charges of hacking into a personal email account belonging to Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

Kernell appeared in a federal courthouse on Wednesday after a grand jury indicted the 20-year-old University of Tennessee-Knoxville student on Tuesday. He was charged with on a single count of “intentionally accessing without authorization.”

The contents of several emails in Palin’s personal email account were published as screen shots on several Web sites. According to the indictment the contents contained “the personal information included, and was not limited to, other e-mail addresses of family members, pictures of family members, at least one cell phone number of a family member, the dates of birth of Governor Palin and another family member, and Governor Palin's address book.”

Following his not guilty plea Kernell was released on bond with a trial date set for Dec. 16. He is facing a maximum of five years in jail and a $250,000 fine.
