Two U.S. journalists who had been reported missing in Lebanon have been found in Syria, detained by authorities for illegal entry.
Holli Chmela, 27, and Taylor Luck, 23, had been reported missing after friends and family hadn’t heard from them for a week. The two had reportedly worked for the Jordan Times in Amman and travelled to Lebanon in late September, telling a friend they were to be in Tripoli on Oct. 1 and return to Jordan three days later.
Their disappearance made international headlines as a massive search involving U.S. officials was organized but on Thursday it was revealed by the Syrian foreign ministry that the two had been arrested after they attempted to enter the country illegally.
Chmela and Luck are expected to be turned over to the U.S. embassy in Damascus after Syrian officials complete their “necessary measures.”
