Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clezio, French Novelist, Awarded Nobel Prize for Literature

French novelist Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clezio has been awarded the 2008 Nobel Prize for Literature by the Swedish Academy which called the 68-year-old an “author of new departures, poetic adventure and sensual ecstasy, explorer of a humanity beyond and below the reigning civilization.”

Le Clezio gained international fame after publishing Le Procès-Verbal (The Interrogation) in 1963 when he was 23-years-old. He was awarded the Prix Théophraste-Renaudot for the work.

It was Le Clezio’s 1980 Désert (Desert) that the Swedish Academy recognized as a defining piece of work for its “magnificent images of a lost culture in the North African desert.”

Le Clezio will join other 2008 Nobel Laureates in Stockholm on December 10.
