#4 LSU Tigers will battle #11 Florida Gators in a heated SEC rivalry on Saturday at 8pm EST on CBS.
The game will pit the last two BCS national champions against each other. Both teams defeated Ohio State to win their national championships. This is the first time in 18 years that two previous national champions have played in each other in the regular season.
The last was Oct. 20, 1990, when 1988 champion Notre Dame beat 1989 champ Miami 29-20 at South Bend.
In the LSU-Florida rivalry, the Tigers have won four of the last six matchups, but Florida leads 28-23-3 in the all-time series.
To add to the rivalry, LSU defensive end Ricky Jean-Francois said that the Tigers defense wants to "take out" Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow during the game. Jean-Francois later stated that he didn't mean to imply that he wanted to injure Tebow, but that LSU will have an aggressive mentality during the game.
Tebow leads the UF offense, which is first in the SEC in scoring. Tebow has completed 61.7% of his passes for 1,025 yards and eight touchdowns, in addition to 157 rushing yards and two TDs.
At this point last year, Tebow had 1,297 passing yards (11 TDs) and 433 rushing yards (8 TDs). Tebow was third in the nation in passing efficiency, eighth in total offense and led the Gators in rushing. This season, he is 24th, 43rd, and fourth, respectively.
However, the drop in his numbers can be attributed to the health of wide receiver Percy Harvin, who leads the Gators in both rushing yards (44.25 ypg) and receiving yards (71). He is joined by Chris Rainey and Jeffrey Demps in the backfield.
Despite entering the season with quarterback questions, LSU leads the SEC's top total offense. Jarrett Lee has stepped in to replace projected starter Ryan Perrilloux, who was kicked off of the team prior to the season.
However, the emergence of running back Charles Scott is the tale of the Tigers offense in 2008. Scott leads the SEC with 535 yards, which is seventh in the nation. Scott was second on the team last season behind Keiland Williams, but beat out Williams for the starting spot this season.
Brandon LaFell has also emerged, leading the SEC with 348 receiving yards. He is joined by Demetrius Byrd in the receiving corps.
The game will also feature two of the nation's most exciting punt returners: UF's Brandon James and LSU's Trinton Holliday. James is seventh in the nation in punt returns and 11th in kickoff returns, while Hollidays is second in punt returns.
