NATO Announces Plans Send Warships to Combat Piracy Off Coast of Somalia

NATO has announced they will send a number of warships to the waters off the coast of Somalia to combat the rising tide in piracy and protect UN ships delivering aid.

A joint task force of NATO member countries will carry out the initiative with plans to be in position by the end of the year. NATO defense ministers have authorized the use of force to combat the pirates who have hijacked shipping vessels, tankers, fishing boats and yachts.

The recent hijacking of the MV Faina grabbed international headlines when it was discovered the vessel was carrying 33 T-72 tanks, weapons and artillery. Pirates were demanding $22 million for the release of the ship. Shortly after the hijacking the vessel was surrounded by several warships from various countries to ensure the cargo was not unloaded on land.
