Russell Brand has signed up to play a womanising soccer star in a new movie.

The ‘Get Him to the Greek’ star will co-produce and star as a veteran alcoholic British player who moves to Texas and causes havoc in the untitled movie.

A source said: “He’s had the idea about how such a wayward soccer star would go down in the States and he knows he’ll have fun playing a character like this one.”

It is believed Russell will base his character on his boyhood hero Frank McAvennie, who played for the actor’s beloved West Ham Football Club in London and was known for his bad boy behaviour.

The source added to The Sun newspaper: “Russell loved watching McAvennie from the terraces as a kid but was also interested in his off-field behaviour.”

Russell’s womanising character in the movie will be sentenced to community service and ordered to coach the local high school soccer team but friends of the star believe he will have to brush up on his sporting skills in order to make the film believable.

The source said: “Russell will have to improve his footie skills though. He’s never hidden the fact he’s not the greatest person to have ever played the game.”
