In an interesting twist on the old golf adage, "Drive for show, putt for dough," the 2010 season-ending PGA TOUR putting statistics reveal that the best putters on the TOUR are not the big money winners.
The five best statistical putters in 2010, according to the PGA TOUR, are Brandt Snedeker, Brian Gay, Mike Weir, Carl Pettersson and Chad Collins. The highest ranking of these five pros on the money list was Pettersson at number 39.
Snedeker averaged 27.97 putts per round for the year, over 89 rounds. He was the only golfer on tour to average less than 28 putts per round. The lowest number of putts in any round was 18 by Blake Adams.
"While the putting averages didn't correlate directly with the money leaders, you can be sure that the putting prowess of these players did earn them a lot of money in 2010," said U.S. Putting Tour founder and president, Jim Hartley.
Mr. Hartley went on to say that amateur golfers who believe they have exceptional putting skills can test their ability in 2011 by competing in the U.S. Putting Tour, a new national putting tour for amateurs.
The USPT's
national putting championship will be held in September in Carlsbad, California and throughout the year, local
putting competitions will take place across the country at which golfers can qualify for the Tour Championship. The first such qualifier takes place at Encinitas Ranch Golf Course in Encinitas, California on Sunday, December 26th.
This
amateur putting tour is expected to draw thousands of golfers, including men and women, young and old. Golfers who are at least 13 years of age can compete in this non-handicap event.
