Defensive tackle for the Washington Redskins, Albert Haynesworth
is suspended without pay for the remainder of the season. According to the National Football League his
conduct is detrimental to the team.
Haynesworth, who in 2009 signed a seven-year contract that the Associated Press said was worth $100 million including $41 million guaranteed, was notified of the ban by Redskins General Manager Bruce Allen, the team said on its website.
Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said in a statement that Haynesworth’s infractions included refusing “to play in our base defense” or in special first- and second-down alignments, and failing to follow coaches’ instructions during both practices and games.
“Despite the club’s numerous attempts to persuade Albert Haynesworth to abide by the terms of his contract, he has repeatedly refused to cooperate with our coaching staff in a variety of ways over an extended period of time,” Shanahan said.
Shanahan deactivated Haynesworth two days ago for a game against the New York Giants. Haynesworth sat on the sidelines as the Giants won 31-7. The coach said that Haynesworth told Allen in a meeting yesterday that the player would no longer speak with Shanahan.
