A recent report titled, “Controlling
the Cloud in Your Organization” from Alsbridge, Inc. revealed that IT
leadership is experiencing difficulty managing and controlling cloud services
in their organizations. In response to this growing problem, the company today
announced its Cloud
Alignment Workshop designed to help IT leaders gain better control of
emerging cloud technologies.
“Our proprietary Cloud Alignment Workshop was created to
help companies define the possible, establish direction, assess the application
of cloud technology within the context of their organization today, assess the
degree of in/outsourcing control desired, conduct provider identification and
mapping, and assist in the planning and piloting of cloud technology. The Cloud
Alignment Workshop will also help the enterprise develop and document its’
cloud roadmap to minimize end-runs around corporate IT and ensure the
enterprise manages the future of cloud technology going forward,” explains
Alsbridge CEO Ben
Trowbridge.
The report from Alsbridge also offers strategies for establishing a Cloud Decision Framework, one of the many tools explored in the workshop.
According to Trowbridge, the first step is to determine whether IT and non-IT executives within the enterprise believe cloud computing can drive value to the business.
“There must be a valid reason and belief that cloud
technologies can help the organization in order to move forward with a
framework,” Trowbridge says.
The report offers the following advice to organizations that need help managing the future of cloud technology:
- Understand how cloud-based services fit within the context of existing technology plans and sourcing strategies.
- Build a common understanding of provider capabilities and service offerings and learn how the early adopters of cloud technology have overcome key issues across the organization. These are important first steps toward building the framework.
- Brainstorm the possible. Evaluate internal skills and capabilities as well as provider service offerings and capabilities in order to help frame and direct organizational thinking around cloud opportunities and how each might drive value to the business.
- Assess the relative cost, architecture, and skills impacted by applying cloud technologies to core business applications. This will help frame the risk, and an organization’s readiness for the adoption of cloud technology.
“One of the most important decisions IT leaders can make is to establish a cloud decision framework which will allow them to maintain control as cloud technologies are deployed across the enterprise,” Trowbridge concludes.
