Elizabeth Edwards Dies of Cancer at 61

RadarOnline.com reports Elizabeth Edwards has died. On Monday, the Edwards family released a statement saying Elizabeth’s cancer had spread to her liver and treatment was no longer helpful. The website says Edwards, 61, spent her last days with estranged husband John Edwards, their three children and close friends.

The Edwards family confirmed Elizabeth’s death in a statement Tuesday. "Today we have lost the comfort of Elizabeth's presence but she remains the heart of this family. We love her and will never know anyone more inspiring or full of life,” the statement said. “On behalf of Elizabeth we want to express our gratitude to the thousands of kindred spirits who moved and inspired her along the way. Your support and prayers touched our entire family."

Elizabeth was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004. Her cancer went into remission after treatment but returned in 2007. The disease had spread to her lymph nodes and bones. Her marriage John Edwards crumbled in 2008 after news of his affair with videographer Rielle Hunter broke. In January 2010, John admitted to being the father of Hunter’s 2-year-old daughter Frances.
