Sofia Coppola was inspired to make her new movie ‘Somewhere’ after becoming a mother.
The ‘Lost in Translation’ director – who has two daughters Romy, four,
and Cosima, five months, with partner Thomas Mars - revealed seeing
Thomas with their kids made her write the story about a bad boy actor
who is forced to sober up when he receives a visit from his 11-year-old
daughter.
She said: “I think motherhood changes your perspective and your
priorities and it makes you think about your own parents. And I was
looking at my boyfriend being the father of a daughter.
“And I was curious how complicated that relationship would be for a guy
who was with a lot of women to have a daughter who is now on the verge
of becoming a woman. Kids are aware of what’s going on when people
think they’re not paying attention. I tried to put that into the
character.”
Sofia said her own relationship with her director father Francis Ford
Coppola also inspired the “sweet, romantic” nature of the
father-daughter bond in the movie.
She told Britain’s Vogue magazine: “I think of adventures I went on as
a kid with my father and I think it’s such an important relationship
for a girl.
