On Heels of “The Company Men” Movie, B&B to Restart Pink Slip Getaway

Rabbit Hill Inn to hand out good cheer and free stays to the unemployed

The outlook may be mixed on hiring practices but to many of the unemployed, it can seem like there’s no end in sight. Interviews may not translate into jobs, emails often go unanswered, and phone calls unreturned. The longer one’s been out of a job, the harder it seems not only to get a job but to keep the faith. Well, the Rabbit Hill Inn in Lower Waterford, Vermont is working to change that – offering Pink Slip Getaway Giveaways for 2011.

The inn, which has issued nearly a dozen complimentary getaways to unemployed workers struggling to keep their heads up, has decided to do it again. “It’s not going away,” said Leslie Mulcahy, who runs the inn with her husband, Brian. “The people unemployed last year are still unemployed this year.”

The sentiment couldn’t be more timely. This Friday, a new movie called “The Company Men” is set to debut at select theaters across the U.S. that will center on joblessness among previously employed people. Directed by John Wells, the movie charts a year in the lives of three men trying to survive corporate downsizing at a major company and the effects on their families and communities. Regardless of one’s employment status, the concept, for many, hits close to home.

The Mulcahys started offering free stays to the unemployed back in 2009 as a way to give a much needed break to couples struggling to stay afloat. The Mulcahys first came to stay at the inn themselves in 1992, though they couldn’t really afford it. They were seeking to escape their financial troubles for a weekend after Brian found himself unemployed along with thousands of others, in an economic situation reminiscent of today. While Leslie and Brian immensely enjoyed their own getaway, they became increasingly enamored with the experience and came back to become assistant innkeepers at the 19-room country inn two years later; in 1997, they purchased the Rabbit Hill Inn -  an outcome they could have never imaged just a few years prior. Hoping to provide the same kind of rejuvenation that they found to others dealing with the uncertainty and anxiety of unemployment, the Mulcahys launched the Pink Slip Getaway Giveaway.

Initially the Pink Slip initiative was to last about half a year but with the economy limping along, the Mulcahys extended their monthly two night prize to run through most of  2010. Now, with the Labor Department reporting unemployment down in 200 of the 372 largest metro areas in October and rising in nearly a third, the Mulcahys are at it again. They’ve extended their Pink Slip Getaway Giveaways another year and will resume booking free nights beginning in January 2011.

Couples, 25 or older, who’ve been experiencing the frustration of unemployment for 12-months or more are encouraged to send their story to the Rabbit Hill Inn.  Each month, one deserving couple (unfortunately, children can not be accommodated) will be awarded a two-night midweek getaway, including everything from beautiful accommodations, full breakfasts, a candlelight dinner on one night, to an old fashioned rabbit’s foot for good luck. Simply send a letter or email by June 15, 2011 explaining your story in one page or less to:
