Darvocet Off the Market

Prescription pain meds Darvocet and Darvon are being pulled from the market at the request of the FDA after trials show a potentially serious heart issues can result.

A popular pain medication, Darvocet has been pulled from the U.S. market at the request of the Food and Drug Administration. Darvon and Darvocet, the brand version of the prescription pain medication propoxyphene, are being pulled after new clinical data showed the drug puts patients at risk of potentially serious or even fatal heart rhythm abnormalities.

Darvon and Darvocet

Darvon and Darvocet, both manufactured by Xanodyne Pharmaceuticals Inc., have raised questions from medical professionals during the 50 years the drugs have been on the market. Darvocet is usually used to relieve mild to moderate pain and contains a combination of propoxyphene (a narcotic pain relievers) and acetaminophen (a pain reliever and fever reducer that increases the effects of the narcotic). While narcotic pain relievers can be beneficial when taken for short periods as prescribed by a doctor, there is always the danger of developing a dependence on the substance.
