Britain's Princess Beatrice was rescued by bodyguards after she was almost knocked over at a nightclub opening.

Security guards for the 22-year-old daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson were left terrified when a man jumped on her back at the at the opening of Prince William's friend Guy Pelly's new nightclub Public in London's swanky Chelsea district.

The bodyguards were reportedly unaware the man was actually a pal of Beatrice's cousin Prince William - and known to the royal student herself - and quickly jumped to her rescue, pushing him to the ground.

A fellow guest told Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper: "He was so drunk that he jumped on Bea and nearly knocked her to the floor.

"At first, the protection officer didn't know who he was and dragged him off and nearly floored him until Bea starting laughing and saying it was all right. Then, when she left, the drunk guy tried to grab her."

The incident comes as police protection for the princess has reportedly been scaled back as part of cost cutting measures.
