Chase Utley went 2-4 with a two-run home run, Pat Burrell was 2-3 with a long ball and Cole Hamels went seven innings allowing two runs while striking out eight as the Philadelphia Phillies put three runs on the board in the sixth inning to top the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-2 on Thursday night to take Game One of the 2008 National League Championship Series.
The Dodgers jumped on the board in the top of the first after Andre Ethier hit a one-out double off Phillies starter Cole Hamels and Manny Ramirez followed with a blast to center that hit off the top of the center field wall 409 feet away for a double. Hamels managed to escape the inning allowing just one run but Los Angeles would add another run in the fourth when Blake DeWitt hit a sacrifice fly to center that scored Matt Kemp.
Los Angeles starter Derek Lowe kept the Phillies batters at bay but ran into trouble in the sixth after Shane Victorino reached second on a throwing error from Dodgers shortstop Rafael Furcal. Chase Utley then hit the first pitch deep into the seat in left center to tie the game at 2-2 and after Ryan Howard grounded out Pat Burrell hit a line-drive homer to left for the 3-2 advantage.
Hamels worked the top of the seventh with no problem and Ryan Madson came on in the eighth taking care of Ethier, Ramirez and Russell Martin before Brad Lidge came on in the ninth to close the door on Los Angeles.
Philadelphia now has a 1-0 lead in their best-of-seven series with Game Two scheduled for Friday at 4:35 p.m. ET with Brett Myers facing the Dodgers Chad Billingsley.
