Martti Ahtisaari, Former Finnish President, Awarded Nobel Peace Prize

The Nobel Foundation has awarded former Finnish president Martti Ahtisaari the Nobel Peace Prize for his continued efforts as a peace negotiator in various conflicts in Europe, Asia and Africa.

 

In recognizing Ahtisaari as the 2008 Nobel Peace Prize recipient the Nobel committee praised the 71-year-old “for his important efforts, on several continents and over more than three decades, to resolve international conflicts.”

 

The committee also credited Ahtisaari for “constructive contributions to the resolution of conflicts in Northern Ireland, in Central Asia and on the Horn of Africa.”

 

Ahtisaari served as the Finish president from 1994-2000.
