Russian Troops Fully Withdrawn from Buffer Zones in Georgia According to EU

The European Union has acknowledged that Russia has completed its withdrawal from buffer zones surrounding the breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

According to a cease fire agreement that ended the brief war between Russia and Georgia the removal of troops from the buffer zones was to be completed by Friday. EU monitors confirmed that the agreement had been met but admitted there were still a few areas that posed problems.

While the EU is satisfied with the Russian withdrawal Georgia has complained troops remain in three disputed areas; Akhalgori and Perevi in South Ossetia and the Kodori Gorge in Abkhazia.

The Russian-Georgian war began on Aug. 7 after Russia sent troops into South Ossetia in response to Georgia’s attempt to regain the breakaway region. Georgia has maintained that South Ossetia and Abkhazia remain part of their country yet Russia has recognized their independence and vowed to protect their citizens.
