Drug Intervention Not Only Needed, But Sometimes Vital, Specialists Warn

Drug Rehab Gives Tips on Drug Addiction Intervention

Many people watched the TV show Intervention. They were fascinated by the irrational and emotional encounters between the drug addicts and their family.

While it is one thing to watch a TV program and wonder at the acts of those afflicted by drug addiction, it is another to actually live with it and try to cope, as millions of Americans do every day.

“While 7.5 million people last year needed drug treatment, less than 20% received it,” comments Mary Rieser, Executive Director for Narconon Drug Rehab in Georgia. “The main reason, according to researchers, is that these addicted persons did not see the need!

“Any of us who have been around an alcoholic or drug addict can relate.  We have seen the drunk who practically falls in the soup during dinner, only to explain later that there is nothing wrong with them and they don’t really need any help.

“Then there was the heroin addict who stole the family money and then wrecked the car when he was high.  When the family tried to get him some help, he explained how there was nothing wrong with him – his family was the one with the problem.

“Recently, we were working with a family to get their daughter into treatment.  Despite having practically destroyed her life and the life of everyone around her, this drug addict refused to get the help that was being offered. Her father was beside himself and literally had a melt down.  The addict gleefully called the authorities and had her father hauled off.  Apparently he is in a psychiatric hospital while his daughter roams free to spend his money while she continues her drug abuse.”

How can you help someone who apparently prefers drugs or alcohol to their family’s welfare?  What can the family do?  No one ever wants to give up, yet it is hard to watch someone kill themselves and while they bring everyone down around them too.

So far the most successful method of getting someone to realize they need treatment has been an intervention and it is usually done by the family.

“If someone in your family needs an intervention, we can help guide your family through doing the necessary steps that hopefully will have the substance abuser arriving on the steps of drug rehab,” continues Ms. Rieser. “If that doesn’t work, then we can refer you t a professional interventionists similar you see on TV.

“Remember, the drug addict you love doesn’t really want to cause hurt.  They are hopelessly addicted and feel that there really is no help available for them.

“The substance abuser is causing you grief for sure.  However, they do not have the mental capacity to care about you right now.  They are engulfed in their own problems.

“Start getting some sleep.”
