Peruvian rebels belonging to the violent communist-inspired Shining Path have killed 12 soldiers and seven civilians in an ambush late Thursday in a remote area of Huancavelica province.
Shining Path had launched numerous campaigns of violence throughout the 1980s and early 1990s in an attempt to overthrow Peru’s government and install communist rule. Estimates have put the number of dead in those attacks around 70,000 but for more than a decade the Maoist-group had shrunk in size and became more isolated.
Thursday’s attack is said to be the most violent in more than a decade and targeted a military convoy that was returning to a base in the coca-growing region. Shining Path is heavily involved in the drug trade, using much of their profits to fund their cause.
It is believed the Peruvian military had been launching operations to target Shining Path rebels operating in the drug trade.
