Nearly 100 Somali Migrants Feared Dead after Being Forced from Boat by Smugglers

Nearly 100 Somali migrants are feared dead after smugglers forced a large number from a boat in the Gulf of Aden.

The boat was en route to Yemen but the smugglers were about three miles from shore when they ordered the Somalis overboard. Those who did not comply were struck with pipes and gun butts. Once overboard they either drowned or struggled to swim the long distance to the shore.

About 47 migrants managed to swim to safety, several of whom are now in critical condition and being treated by at UN refugee medical center in Ahwar.

Yemen has an open-door policy towards refugees which has attracted tens of thousands of Somalis to flee from their war-torn homeland.
