Mysterious Hemorrhagic Fever Kills 3 in Africa

A mysterious illness has killed 3 people in South Africa and may have infected 121 others. The World Health Organization (WHO) says the disease appears to be a form of hemorrhagic fever but it is still under investigation.

Tests on the disease have proved negative for several main type of hemorrhagic fever including Ebola, Lassa fever, Rift Valley fever and Marburg fever.

The first death from the unknown illness occurred on September 13. A tour guide had fallen ill in Zambia and was evacuated to Johannesburg where she died. A paramedic and a nurse who treated the woman died three weeks later.

WHO spokesman Gregory Hartl said 121 people are being monitored for signs of the disease.

Symptoms of viral hemorrhagic fever include dizziness, marked fever, muscle aches, fatigue, loss of strength and bleeding underneath the skin, inside organs or from the eyes ears and mouth.
