Brett Myers wasn’t exactly lights out on the mound but the Philadelphia Phillies pitcher certainly did a number with his bat as he went 3-3 with 3 RBIs and scored two runs while Shane Victorino went 2-5 with a triple and 4 RBIs as their club topped the Los Angeles Dodgers 8-5 on Friday night to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven National League Championship Series.
Once again the Dodgers plated the first run of the game as Blake DeWitt scored Andre Ethier on a groundout in the top of the second inning but the Phillies bounced back in the bottom half of the frame as they scored four runs, all with two outs. Greg Dobbs got things started with an infield single and he came around to score on a Carlos Ruiz double. Brett Myers then singled him home. Jimmy Rollins followed with a single and an error by Dodgers centerfielder Matt Kemp pushed Myers to third and Rollins to second. Shane Victorino then single to score two more before Dodgers starter Chad Billinglsey could get out of the inning.
L.A. responded with a run in the top of the third as James Loney singled home Russell Martin to pull the Dodgers to within 4-2 but the Phillies answered once again in their half of the inning as Pat Burrell started the inning with a single, Jayson Werth followed with a double and Dobbs was intentionally walked. Billingsley got Ruiz to hit into a fielder’s choice to get Burrell at the plate but Myers singled to right that scored Werth and Dobbs for a 6-2 lead.
Billingsley was then lifted and Chan Ho Park came in, struck out Rollins but then gave up a triple to Victorino that scored Ruiz and Myers and the advantage was pushed to 8-2.
Manny Ramirez provided the last bit of offense with a three-run homer in the top of the fourth to bring the Dodgers to within 8-5 but after Myers was lifted after five innings the Dodgers couldn’t get the big hit despite having their chances.
In the ninth the Phillies called upon Brad Lidge to shut the door and he went the hard route again as he put a pair of runners on base with one out but then set Matt Kemp down on strikes and did the same to Nomar Garciaparra to save the game.
The series now shifts to Los Angeles were the two clubs will meet again on Sunday with the first pitch being delivered at 8:22 p.m. ET.
